Having photographed their proposal at Millbrook Winery in New York last Fall, I was so excited to finally get to do Amy & Gerard’s engagement session at Waveny Park in New Canaan, Connecticut. Learning how Amy and Gerard met reminds me of one of the reasons I love to photograph weddings, they are just magical. “We met when Gerard’s Uncle Howie decided to set the two of us up on a date.” Amy is from Pittsburgh, PA and Gerard is from Rye, NY. Uncle Howie lives in Pittsburgh and is close family friends with Amy’s family. Gerard’s cousins grew up with Amy and her brother, Eric, but Gerard and Amy never met. When Amy decided to move to the Big Apple, Uncle Howie set them up! They met in October of 2014 and had their first date at Blue Hill in Manhattan.
Here’s their story!
“The first thing I thought when seeing Amy was “wow!” I had tried looking up photos of Amy on Google and Facebook, but the girl I was expecting to see was not standing in front of me when she came through the door. Instead, my breath was taken away by the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. The sparks were flying.”
Gerard: The first thing I thought when seeing Amy was “wow!” I had tried looking up photos of Amy on google and facebook, but the girl I was expecting to see was not standing in front of me when she came through the door. Instead, my breath was taken away by the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. The sparks were flying.
Amy: The first thing I thought was, “Way to go, Howie!”. Gerard was very tall and I was impressed with how handsome he was especially for being a blind date.
Gerard: I knew from the moment I met Amy that she was a very special girl. She is so genuine, and the nicest person I know. I always knew that the two of us were made for each other. If I had to pick an exact moment, I would say for my birthday two years ago, she took me to Vermont and surprised me with a hiking trip. The hiking trip was to climb the tallest mountain in Vermont. She put so much time and effort into making me happy, it was really more than I could ever expect.
Amy: I knew Gerard was the one when he surprised me with flowers and groceries to make me a home cooked meal in the city and I thought to myself, I can get used to this!
Gerard: Well Chris, you know a lot about this!! I was definitely nervous, but confident in the question that I was asking
Amy. I was sure that it was the right moment, and have never been happier in all my life when she said yes! I love her!
Amy: Gerard and I planned to visit Millbrook winery for a “jazz festival”. Once we arrived at the vineyard, Gerard suggested we go for a walk on the wine trail because we have never done it. I was hesitant to walk the trail because I did not want to ruin my new boots that we went shopping for the week before (Now I know why we went shopping for new outfits!). We walked to the top of the hill overlooking the beautiful vineyard. I had NO idea he was going to propose! He told me this was a perfect spot to take a picture and as he was reaching for his camera he went down on one knee. I was so happy and in shock. I had no idea what was happening. As you recall, Gerard had you hide in the vineyard to capture the moment on camera and then led me into the winery to where all my family and friends were hiding. It was truly the best day of my entire life!
Gerard: I love what an amazing person Amy is. She is so kindhearted and is the nicest person I know. She is incredibly smart, and I love how she loves me for me and drives me to be a better person.
Amy: I love that he will go above and beyond and do anything to make me happy!
Gerard: Every day is a perfect day with Amy! We love watching sunsets together from our little sailboat in LBI. There is something truly special about being out there on the water with Amy, and watching the colors paint a beautiful picture in the background.
Amy: The perfect day looks like us waking up in LBI, walking to pearl street market to eat a fresh breakfast, spending the afternoon paddle boarding then relaxing on the beach, to return home to a home-cooked meal and drinks with family and friends and then watching the sunset together.
Gerard: I’m looking forward to calling Amy wife for the first time, as well as dancing with Amy Friscia!! Amy: I am looking forward to celebrating the special day with the man I love with all of my friends and family dancing and having a great time!
